Typography

In my second trimester at SAE I had a typography unit. During this unit I learnt about different typefaces and the importance of type in the field of design. I leant about kerning, leading, and tracking which proved useful for improving several typefaces and proved even more useful for creating branding names.

The final outcome of this unit was to produce a poster on a typeface of my choice and two magazine covers focusing on the masthead.

The typography poster I chose was Didot. I like the type and felt I could create a nice feel to the poster. I also learnt about working in CMYK. This was the first poster I designed for print and I learnt the importance that CMYK has when working on print based designs. When I first made the poster I had chose the colour orange. It had proved to be aesthetically pleasing but I learnt that orange doesn't always print out the way it looks on screen so I changed the colour to hot pink which kept it looking calm and bold.

The second assignment was to design two magazine mastheads. The magazine I chose was Edge, a magazine that focuses on reviewing video games. This was my first taste of any sort of editorial work. When working on this assignment I was told that I had to have two variations. I decided to pick one dark image and one light image because I believed it was a good way to learn about masthead designs and a good way to learn how to apply the same elements to an image of opposite contrast.
